Merlyn D. Slaght
Merlyn D. Slaght, age 84, of Lancaster died Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster. He was born on December 13, 1923 in Burton, WI, the son of Elvin and Gladys (Irish) Slaght. He attended country school and then graduated from Potosi High School. Merlyn served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart. On September 12, 1946, he married Doris Bohringer at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They lived on Burton Hill and later moved near Hurricane and finally to Lancaster in 1950. He was employed with Waterloo Township and later with John Deere in Dubuque, IA. Merlyn retired in 1982. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Slaght, Lancaster; his daughter, Debbie (Daniel) Slaght, Cassville; and his sister, LaVon Meier, Potosi.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Maleta Stluka.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 18, 2008 at the Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster with Pastor Mark Hoehne officiating. Burial was in Blakes Prairie Cemetery, Bloomington Township. Visitation was held on Friday, July 18, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home.
Marietta Slama
Marietta J. Slama, age 76, of Cassville, died on Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home. Private family services will be held at a later date. Martin Funeral Home in Cassville is assisting the family.
Edith M. Smith
Edith Margaret Smith, age 100, died Thursday, August 8, 2013, at the Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster. She was born on September 8, 1912 to Henry Connor and Janettie (Heiliger) Heberlein in North Lancaster, Wisconsin. She attended Whitcomb School, a one-room school, for eight years and then Lancaster High School, graduating in 1931.
After graduation Edith worked in various homes, the last one before she was married was the Ramshaws. In 1937 Edith was united into marriage to Delos Buddy Pittenger Smith in the E&R Parsonage. They farmed in North Lancaster for 29 years. They had three daughters, Elaine Edith Jones, Loveland, Colorado, Margaret Ann Swan, Huber Heights, Ohio, and Mary Lee Smith, Crockett, Texas.
Edith used to play for the Sunday school and the Sunshine Choir and also taught Sunday school.
In 1966, after selling the farm, Edith and Delos moved to Baraboo where Edith worked in a nursing home for 20 years, being called in frequently. Edith also earned her certified nursing aid at St. Marys Nursing Home.
After Delos passed away in 1989, Edith retired from nursing home work and moved back to Lancaster in 1991 to a retirement apartment. She did volunteer work, played the piano for the nursing home for the weekly sing-a-longs.
Edith loved to travel, visiting the family in various states. Also loved to fly there, meet new friends, and enjoy her 9 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. Edith has one surviving brother, Wilbur Heberlein.
Edith was preceded in death by parents; her husband; son-in-law, James Swan; and three sisters, Leola Bailie, Erma Novinska, and Evelyn Fritz; three great grandchildren; her close friends, Wilma Walker and Patsy Rice. Edith also lost Ruth Gathright, her god-daughter.
Funeral services were held at 11 am on Monday, August 12, 2013 at the Bethlehem Evangelical & Reformed Church, Lancaster, with Rev. Mark Dieter officiating. Burial was in Liberty Ridge Cemetery, Liberty Ridge Township. Friends called from 9:30 am until the time of services Monday at the church. Schwartz Funeral Home, Lancaster, is assisting the family. In lieu of plants and flowers, an Edith M. Smith memorial fund has been established.
Michael P. Smith
Michael P. Smith, age 66, passed away on Tuesday, August 28, 2012, surrounded by his family at the Good Samaritan Society in Fennimore.
Michael was born on February 10, 1946, in Cuba City, the son of Stanley and Charlotte (Slaght) Smith. He graduated from Lancaster High School in 1964. Mike was united in marriage to Mary Melcher Smith on July 2, 1988, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Madison. He was employed as a welding instructor at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College from 1971 to 2001. Mike enjoyed collecting antiques, working on the family farm, training horses, and spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of the Lancaster United Methodist Church and the F&AM Lodge No. 4 of Potosi.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; daughters, Molly Ann Smith and Megan Elizabeth Smith; a sister, Charlene Jan Smith; mother and father-in-law, John (Beatrice) Melcher and their family; and many cousins.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were held on Friday, August 31, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lancaster with Pastor Barbara Cook officiating. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. Family and friends called on Thursday, August 30, 2012, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Lancaster United Methodist Church where a 3:45 p.m. Masonic Service was held. Visitation was also on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services. Martin Funeral Home in Lancaster is assisting the family. In lieu of plants and flowers, a Michael P. Patrica Smith
Patrica A. Smith, age 72, of Prairie du
Chien, died on Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at her residence in Prairie du Chien.
Pat was born on February 23, 1943, in Lancaster, the daughter of Harley
and Esther (Brandemuehl) Foster. On April 2, 1977, she
married Dr. Clifford Smith. Together they spent many years
raising Appaloosa horses in rural Prairie du Chien. Clifford
preceded her in death on May 11, 2010. In later years, she
enjoyed planting flowers, watching the birds and other wild life that visited
her home. Pat also enjoyed scrapbooking, card stamping,
relaxing in the pool, and camping parties with her family at her home.
In addition to her parents and Clifford, she was preceded
in death by her first husband, Jim Mitchell.
Survivors include her sister, Dolores Reed; a brother, Jack
Foster, both of Lancaster; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 29, 2015,
at 11:00 a.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Lancaster with
Pastor Mark Hoehne officiating. Burial was in Hillside
Cemetery, Lancaster. Family and friends called on Saturday

Ronald A. "Snuffy" Smith, age 68, of Potosi, died on Monday, December 6, 2010, at UW Hospitals in Madison. Services will be held at a later date. Martin Funeral Home in Potosi is assisting the family.
Jean L. Smoot
Jean Lorraine Smoot, age 88, of Lancaster, died on Monday, March 12, 2012, at her home. She was born on November 22, 1923, in Wisconsin, the daughter of Louis A. and Ethel Irene(Kennedy) Drews. Jean graduated from Muscoda High School in 1941. She moved to Madison where she worked for Oscar Meyer. Jean was united in marriage to Walter A. Jack Smoot in October of 1944 in Madison. After their marriage, the couple moved to Lancaster. Jean began her employment in Lancaster as a professional waitress. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing cards, going for rides and playing Scrabble. Jean loved spending time with her family and her good friend, Sammy, of eighteen years (meow).
Survivors include her two children: Susan (Ronald) Talley, Murray, UT; Gary (Laurie) Smoot, Machesney Park, IL; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, a son, John Doug (Cheryl) Smoot, and a brother, Norman Drews.

Margaret Snider
Margaret A. Snider, age 82, of
Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 26, 2017, at Grant
Regional Health Center in Lancaster, surrounded by her family.
She was born on December 21, 1934, In Ellenboro, the daughter of
Eldon and Jeanette (Laabs) Dobson. Margaret was united in marriage to Bill
Snider on April 4, 1953, at the United Methodist Church in Dubuque, IA.
Margaret was employed at Grant County Herald Independent and later at
CESA3 in Fennimore. She loved spending the last 20 years
wintering at their home in Ft. Pierce, Florida. She enjoyed doing crafts and
making baby blankets for grandchildren and friends. Margaret also enjoyed
camping and was an avid supporter of her grandchildren in all their sporting
activities. She loved spending time with family and
friends, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Bill
Snider; daughters: Lori (Roger) Stier and Sue Ellis; a son, John (Dawn)
Snider; her grandchildren: Ryan Vondra, Lecia (Tom) Lenz, Kyle (Alyssa)
Stier, Brianna Stier, Shane and Shawna Ellis, Brock and Brett Snider;
step-grandchildren: Chad (Silke) Stier, Damon Stier, and Dustin (Jen) Stier.
In addition to her parents, Margaret
was preceded in death a daughter, Debra Vondra and a brother, Clayton
Dobson.

Amelia Christine Snyder
Amelia Christine Snyder, daughter of
Andrew and Ashly Snyder was born to heaven on her day of birth, Friday, May
19, 2017, weighing 4 lb. 10.1 oz. Amelia was born at Upland Hills Health
Hospital, Dodgeville, WI. She is survived by her loving parents Andrew and
Ashly Snyder of Fennimore, WI; maternal grandparents, Michael & Christine
Engelhardt; paternal grandparents, Johnie and Trina Snyder; maternal great
grandparents, Melvin and Wendy Carlson; Jack and Rebecca Engelhardt;
paternal great grandparents, Don and Bernadette (Abing) Williams; Darrell
and Eleanor Snyder; many loving aunts and uncles and four cousins.
Amelia was preceded in death by Leo Abing (Great
grandfather) and Connie Silvers (Great Aunt).
An intimate service was held on Monday, May 22, 2017 at
Martin Schwartz Funeral Home & Crematory, Lancaster, for immediate family.

Lois J. Soden
Lois J. Soden, age 85, of Lancaster,
passed away on Tuesday, August 19, 2014, at the Lancaster Care Center.
She was born on February 1, 1929, in Lodi, the daughter of Ted and
Alice (Chrysler) Quam. On March 28, 1953, she married
Victor Soden, Sr. in Caledonia, MN. She and her husband
lived and raised their five children in Lancaster. Lois
enjoyed spending winters in Florida, spending time with her grandkids and
most of all, spending time with her husband, Rip. She
loved to read and dance. Lois also enjoyed spending time
crocheting afghans for her family members.
Survivors include her four children:
Ken (Barb) Thompson, Lancaster; Deb (David) Randall, Boscobel; Victor Soden,
Jr., Monroe; and Vicki (Bob) Paris, Lancaster; thirteen grandchildren;
twenty-one great-grandchildren; her sister, Clarice Packard, Baraboo; her
brother, Duane Quam, Wisconsin; sisters-in-law, Hester Baier, Eau Galle;
Hazel Soden, Lancaster; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband,
Victor Soden, Sr., one sister, Janice Quam, her son and daughter-in-law,
Richard and Barbara Thompson, her grandson, Nick Pitzen, and a
brother-in-law, Harlan Packard.

Muriel A. Soden,
age 91, of

(Tudy) Soden, Ellsworth; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and one brother: Marty Betz, Cherokee Village, AR; other relatives and many friends.
In addition to her parents, Muriel was preceded in death by her husband, two grandchildren: Shawn and Tonnie; and six sisters: Margaret Betz, Gladys Augustine, Lorraine Stanton, Myra McCants, Georgie Horvatin and Mary Jane Klocke.

Ruebin Spease
Ruebin Spease, age 86, of Lancaster, died on Sunday, July 25, 2010, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster. He was born on December 12, 1923, in Lancaster, the son of Theodore and Jenny (Lickel) Spease. Ruebin graduated from Lancaster High School in 1942. In 1944, he entered the United States Navy and served his country in the South Pacific until his honorable discharge in 1946. On June 10, 1947, Ruebin was united in marriage to Shirley Jeanne Wiedmann. To this union, three children were born, Steve, Gary and Patti. After their marriage, the couple farmed for seventeen years in South Lancaster Township. Ruebin was a truck driver for Haskins Gas & Oil for seventeen years, retiring in 1985. He continued to work part-time until the age of seventy. Ruebin was a member of St. Clement Catholic Church. He was an avid coon hunter, played euchre, and loved to hunt, fish and hunt morels. Ruebin and Shirley traveled extensively throughout the forty-eight states and Canada.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-three years, Shirley Spease, Lancaster; their children: Steve Spease, Stephenville, TX; Gary (JoAnne) Spease, Milwaukee; Patti (Ervin) Folz, Marshfield; three grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Ruebin was preceded in death by two grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

Marie Specht
Marie E. Specht, age 77, of Lancaster,
passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2015, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home.
She was born on July 22, 1937, in Arthur, the daughter of Paul and
Gladys (Nodolft) Burkhard. Marie's father, Paul, came
from Switzerland in 1929. She graduated from Platteville
High School. On April 19, 1956, Marie was united in
marriage to Lawrence E. "Arkie" Specht at First English Lutheran Church in
Platteville. She worked at various restaurants and later
for Ren Company. Marie was employed for over 15 years for
Grant County Social Services. In retirement, she worked
at the Grant County Thrift Shop. Marie was a member of
the Rebekah Lodge in Arthur and the Lancaster United Methodist Church.
Marie's kindness to her family and friends will always be remembered
in our hearts.
Survivors include her husband, Arkie; a sister, Grace
Ann Burkhard; many nieces and nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and
Gladys Burkhard.

Alice Speth
Alice M. "Grandma Tweety" Speth,
90, of Belmont, died Wednesday, July 1, 2015, at Upland Hills Nursing and
Rehabilitation in Dodgeville. Alice was born on December 9,
1924 on the family farm in Jo Daviess County, IL the daughter of Albert & Minnie
(Gammelien) Holtz. Alice married Dick "Big Foot" Speth on
January 22, 1943 at the church parsonage in Platteville. They
lived all their married life in the Belmont area.
Alice was proud of her faith and enjoyed gardening, doing
crossword and jigsaw puzzles, feeding and watching her birds, and spending time
with her family and friends. She worked at the Cuba City
Hospital and Nursing Home for 31 years.
Alice is survived by her children, Betty (Richard)
Dellabella, Bill (Sara) Speth, Peggy (Butch) Bockhop, Phil (Sheri) Speth, Frank
(Junerose) Speth, and Penny (Gary) Kies; 19 grandchildren; and 17
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick in 2000; her
parents; four sisters; two brothers; and granddaughter, Ann Sambles.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday,
July 8, 2015 at Peace Lutheran Church in Belmont, with Reverend Connie Matye
officiating. Burial was in Belmont Cemetery.
Friends called from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at
Martin Schwartz Funeral Home in Platteville, and one hour prior to the services
Wednesday at the church.

Alice Speth
Alice M. Speth, age 99 of Hollywood
Florida, formerly of Platteville, passed away Saturday, October 3, 2015. She was
born October 28, 1915, in Livingston, Wisconsin, the daughter of Rueben and Maud
(Gibbon) Nicholson. On October 9, 1940, Alice was united into marriage to Leo
"Curley" Speth. They owned and operated Speth's Plumbing and Heating from 1947
until 1972. Alice was employed for over 25 years at Mound City Bank in
Platteville. They enjoyed their winters in Florida, and retired to Hollywood,
Florida in 1975.
Surviving Alice is Jeanne Wilkins Durkis, whom she called
"my daughter", a granddaughter, Annessa and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Curley, four
brothers, two sisters, and one half-brother.
Private family graveside services were held on
Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at Rock Church Cemetery, rural Livingston. Martin
Schwartz Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Platteville is assisting the
family.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter,
Stacy Lynn Wickler; and her father, Burdette Dobson.

Chad E. Sprague, age 41, of Milton, formerly of Bloomington, died on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at his home. He was born on March 13, 1971, in Lancaster, the son of Gary and Dianne (Gengler) Sprague. Chad attended Bloomington and Fennimore High Schools. He married Dawn Borgwardt on October 28, 1995, in Milton. Chad was employed for many years at Stoughton Trailer. He enjoyed snowmobiling in Upper Michigan, going to the cabin in Minocqua and fishing. He also enjoyed watching and attending UFC and MMA events. Chad loved spending time with his dogs, Lucy and Chloe.

Mary Lou Sprosty
Mary Lou (Morgan) Sprosty, age 83, of Patch Grove, died on Friday, February 19, 2010, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien. She was born on September 8, 1926, to Joseph and Susan Moris in rural Beetown, Wisconsin. She was united in marriage to Ralph Morgan on November 11, 1944 at St. Johns Catholic Church in Patch Grove. To this union were born ten daughters and seven sons. They farmed near rural Mt. Ida and later in rural Bagley. Ralph died in February of 1966. Mary Lou re-married Arthur Sprosty on May 31, 1980 also at St. Johns. They lived in Patch Grove, where she lived until the time of her death.
Mary Lou enjoyed being involved with her family, cooking, crocheting, bowling, and playing cards. She worked at a restaurant for a number of years where she was known for her famous apple pie. As a life-long member of St. Johns Catholic Church she was a member of the Altar Society and assisted with many church activities.
She is survived by her children: Barbara Meng of Glen Flora; Jim (Jean) of Mt. Hope; Linda (Butch) Quick of Orfordville; Dennis (Diane) of Lancaster; Mary Ann (David) Redman of Prairie du Chien; Dorothy (Dave) Holtz of Tomah; Robert (Connie) of Prairie du Chien; Donna (Mike) McKinney of Bagley; Betty (Jon) Cooley, Bagley; Kathy (Ron) Knapp, Mt. She is also survived by her two sisters Theresa (Ross) Bushnell; Susan (Robert) Boldt and four brothers, Bob (Jane) New Jersey; Larry (Judy) Milwaukee; Gerald (Sherrie) Milwaukee; Fritz, Prairie du Chien and 40 grandchildren and42 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Susan Moris, her husbands Ralph Morgan and Arthur Sprosty, her daughter, Laurie Laufenberg and infant son, Phillip, her brothers, Leo, Joe, Charles, Barney, Paul & Raymond and grandchildren Dwain, Jody, Austin and Aren Henkes.

Mildred Sprosty
Mildred J. Sprosty, age 90, of
Patch Grove, died on Friday, November 26, 2010, at Prairie Maison in
Prairie du Chien. She was born on May 1, 1920, in Haney
Township, the daughter of John and Ann (Doskocil) Mezera.Mildred
graduated from Mount Hope High School.
She then attended nursing school in Milwaukee where she graduated as
a Registered Nurse. On April 11, 1945, Mildred was united in
marriage to James F. Sprosty at St. Johns
Catholic Church in
Prairie du Chien. In 1952, James and Mildred moved to the
family farm. Mildred was employed as a Registered Nurse for
forty-nine years. She was strong in her faith and was a member
of St. Johns Catholic Church in
Patch Grove and the West Grant Lioness Club. She loved
spending time with her family and attending her grandchildrens
activities. Mildred enjoyed gardening, canning, crocheting,
and making quilts.

Gary Lee Stagman
Gary Lee Stagman, age 57, of Lancaster, died on Saturday, September 26, 2009, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster. He was born on December 22, 1951 in Prairie du Chien, the son of Charles and Helen (Bean) Stagman. He graduated from West Grant High School in 1970. He furthered his education at UW-LaCrosse, graduating in 1974 with a degree in Business Administration. He was employed as a banker in West Bend, LaCrosse and Madison, WI. Gary was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He liked to watch the Badgers and Packers and was involved with dirt track racing. Gary was also a goodwill ambassador for Lancaster Speedway. Anyone who knew Gary knew he was generous beyond his own needs. He would always deliver treats to people who have touched his life; most recently those at Orchard Manor and Grant Regional Health Center.

Helen Stagman
Helen F. Stagman, age 82 of Bagley,
passed away Thursday, April 2, 2015 at Orchard Manor Nursing Home,
surrounded by her family. She was born December 2, 1932, in Bloomington, the
daughter of Milo and Velma (Sitts) Bean. Helen graduated from Boscobel High
School. On June 8, 1951, she was united into marriage to Charles H. Stagman
at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. Together they raised three
children; Gary, Greg and Gale. Helen spent thirty-five years as a cook at
the Bagley Hotel, serving up many delicious meals. On her time off, she
enjoyed crocheting, working in her flower beds, crossword puzzles, and
watching NASCAR. She especially enjoyed watching her grandson Matt, race the
dirt tracks around the area. Most of all, Helen dearly loved spending time
with her family.
Surviving is her loving husband of sixty-three years,
Chuck, her son, Greg (Tami) Stagman and her daughter, Gale (Sparky) Gardner,
grandchildren: Zach, Lacey, Matt, Kyle, Katrina, Cody and
Tyler, her great-grandchildren: Ava, Brynn, Jakson, and Harrison.
Helen was preceded in death by her son, Gary, her
brothers: Steve, Dwayne "Pete", and Rodger (Pat) Bean.

Michele Marie Stanton, age 54, of Lancaster, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster. She was born on December 4, 1954, the daughter of Don and Ruth (Kilgore) Anderson in Estherville, IA. Michele graduated from Maquoketa High School in Iowa and from Finley School of Nursing. She was united in marriage to Gary Stanton on August 2, 1975. She loved to spend her time knitting, sewing and enjoying the outdoors. Her biggest love was her children and especially her grandchildren. She will be forever missed.

Geneva Helena Stark, age 86, of Cassville, died peacefully on Saturday, September 10, 2011, at Lancaster Care Center, Lancaster. Geneva was born on March 18, 1925, in Cassville Township, to Chris and Eva (Krischbaum) Meier. She was united in marriage to Orville H. Stark on May 27, 1944, at St. Charles Rectory in Cassville. He preceded her in death on October 18, 2006.
Geneva lived in Rockford, IL, all her married life. She resided at the Lancaster Care Center after the death of her husband. While living in Rockford, she worked for several years at Stone Pharmacy. For many years, Orville and Gen enjoyed their summer home on the lake at Lake Mills, WI.

Joseph Staskal, age 72, of
Lancaster, passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center
in Dubuque, IA. He was born on November 25, 1941, in
Boscobel, the son of Dorris and Mildred (Rounds) Staskal.
Joseph graduated from Fennimore High School in 1960. On
June 22, 1963, he was united in marriage to Janice Miles.
After their marriage, Joseph was employed with Stella Cheese, Elwell
Reynolds, and H&N Plumbing and Heating until his retirement in 2004.
He was a member of the Lancaster United Methodist Church.
Joseph enjoyed working for others, playing cards, fishing,
woodworking, farming, and dearly loved spending time with family.
Survivors include his loving wife, Janice; their
children, Shawn and Duane (Alisa); five grandchildren: Shana, Shyann,
Samantha, Orion, and Jared; one great-grandson, Ryker; five siblings:

D. Steinbrenner
Allen D. Steinbrenner, age 82, of Lancaster, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 28, 2010, at Orchard Manor in Lancaster surrounded by family and friends, after a long illness.
He is best known for his leadership in agriculture and the resources he brought to the residents of Grant County. A true family man, he was passionate about education and athletics. He mentored numerous 4-H youth in club organizations, and in local, state and national livestock judging teams.
Al was born September 27, 1927, in Mt. Hope, WI, to Roy and Orrel (Allen) Steinbrenner, and he was the only boy amongst the six children. He graduated from Mt. Hope High School in 1945, where he played basketball. He went on to serve his country in the United States Navy on the aircraft carrier Antietam as a meteorologist, and also played on numerous Navy basketball teams. Following his service, he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, where he earned a B.S. in Agriculture Education. He was also a letter winner on the Mens Varsity Basketball team which earned two championships in the WI State University Conference, was the Jr. Prom King and the Sr. Class President. He began his long career in youth and adult education in Richland Center, where he served as a 4-H Agent. He met the love of his life Elizabeth Bette OConnor in Richland Center and they were married on July 21, 1956, at the Viroqua United Methodist Church. They moved to Elkhorn where he served as 4-H Agent in Walworth County. He earned his MS degree in Dairy Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and moved his family to Grant County in 1966, where he served as the Executive Secretary of the 1967 Farm Progress Days. He was then hired as Grant Countys first Dairy and Livestock Agent. In 1983, he received the Distinguished Service Award at the National Association of County Agricultural Agents annual meeting. He was an Associate Professor and served on the UW-Extension faculty until his retirement in 1987, with 32 years of federal service. In 1988, he received Emeritus rank. He was active in numerous professional and community organizations; he served as Director and President of the UW-Platteville Agricultural Alumni Association and on committees for the Wisconsin and National Association of County Agricultural Agents. He was a faithful member of the Lancaster United Methodist Church and served as Administrative Board Chairman. Al was a Past President of the Grant County chapter of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Alumni Club. He is the recipient of swine and dairy leadership awards from the Grant County Pork Producers Association and the Associated Milk Producers, Inc. Following his retirement, Al and Bette enjoyed extensive travel to over 25 Elderhostels. They also loved to vacation with their children and grandchildren that included trips to his sisters and extended family. Al and his love for life attitude will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Bette, Lancaster, their two daughters, Suzanne (Mike) Hurd of Sammamish, WA and Anne (Steve) Kraus of Plymouth, MN; five cherished grandchildren: Rachel, Emily and Natalie Hurd, and Tom and John Kraus; his sisters: Elizabeth Narloch of Citrus Heights, CA, Eleanor Waterman of Waukesha, WI and numerous nieces and nephews.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters Miriam Steinbrenner, Esther Johnson and Lois Wepking.

Norbert W. "Nub" Steinl, age 79,
of Bagley, died Friday, October 30, 2015 at Grant Regional Health Center in
Lancaster. Norbert was born on September 25, 1936, on the
family farm, the son of Leo and Philomene (Recker) Steinl. He
attended St. Mary's Catholic School and graduated from Bloomington High School
in 1954. Following graduation, Norbert entered the United
States National Guard and served his country for eight years.
On October 3, 1964, he was united in marriage to Deanna M. Stainhofer at St.
Mary's Catholic Church in Bloomington. After their marriage,
Norbert continued to farm the family farm milking cows until 1992; he continued
to grain farm for several years. He enjoyed playing sports in
his youth, hunting, fishing, dancing, playing cards and wintering in Florida.
He truly enjoyed his vegetable garden and selling his sweet corn in
Bloomington. Norbert was a member of St. Mary's Catholic
Church and served on the Bloomington Township Board for many years.

Stelpflug
Harold F. Stelpflug, age 92, of Lancaster, died peacefully on Monday, June 25, 2012, at his home. He was born on March 23, 1920, in Platteville, the son of Bernard and Margaret (Siepker) Stelpflug. Harold enlisted in the United States Army in December of 1941 and served his country until November of 1945 stationed in England. Upon return from service, he was engaged in a lifetime of farming. Harold met Marie Bornhauser and they were married on September 12, 1953, at Sacred Heart Church in Dubuque, Iowa. They were blessed with nine children. Harold was a lifetime member of the Richard Burns American Legion Post No. 109 of Lancaster and St. Clement Catholic Church.

William Bill Alexander Stephen, 74, of Potosi , passed away on June 10, 2010 in Jacksonville , Florida .

Bill Stephen was born in San Jose , California to Charles William Alexander Stephen and Irene Evelyn Gracia on January 16th, 1936 . He married Linann Udelhoven on February 9th, 1963 in St. Brendans Church in San Francisco . He graduated from Santa Clara University . He worked as a civil engineer for OICC (Officer in Charge of Construction) for the Navy for 21 years. He served in the Army as a Army Intelligence and Security Officer. He received multiple certificates of commendation for outstanding performance over and above normal work requirements and attained the level of GS 15 as a civil servant for the Navy.
Bill Stephen is preceded in death by both parents and survived by wife Linann Stephen and four children Bill Stephen, Rochelle Focaracci, Lisa Larsson, and Daniel Stephen and spouses, as well as five grandchildren.

Nancy L. Stephens, age 72, of Platteville, died Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at Southwest Health Center in Platteville. She was born on July 4, 1937, the daughter of LeRoy and Emma (Bartels) Stephens in Platteville , WI . Her parents were tenant farmers until early 1953 when they moved to a farm north of Belmont . Nancy attended Platteville High School and graduated from Belmont High School in 1955. She worked part-time and later full-time at Schultzs 5 & 10 store. Nancy attended Platteville Teachers College while working part-time. In 1975, she went to work at First National Bank, retiring in 1996. Nancy enjoyed working on crosswords, puzzles and watching the Brewers, Cubs and Packers on TV.
Nancy is survived by her cousins, including her special cousin, Don Hansen, Madison and her special friend, Barbara Browning and her family, Platteville; other relatives and friends.

Adele Stimart
Adele E. Stimart, age 95, passed away
Monday, February 20, 2017 at Atrium Post Acute Care in Lancaster. She was
born October 22, 1921 the daughter of Allen and Clara (Their) Aupperle.
Adele graduated Lancaster High School. She furthered her education and
graduated from University of Wisconsin Platteville. Adele taught in many
rural schools, that included Kingsford and Beetown country schools. She was
united into marriage to Loyal Bartow in 1943. He preceded her in death in
1968. Adele later married Felix "Speed" Stimart in 1972.
He preceded her in death in 2003. In 1958, Adele became employed as the
music teacher at Winskill Elementary School in Lancaster, retiring after 25
years in 1983. In her retirement, Adele was a substitute teacher for many
years, as she enjoyed working with teachers, and making friends with the
students, whom she never forgot. Speed and Adele spent many winters in
Sebring, Florida, and summers in Bagley.
Surviving is her daughter; Carolyn Powers, a special
niece; Sheiran Austin, a daughter in law; Christie Bartow, step children;
James (Dorothy) Stimart, Gene (Linda) Stimart, and many grandchildren, great
grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbands Loyal Bartow,
and Felix Stimart, her sons; Bill and Ken Bartow, and her brother John
"Jack" (Helen) Aupperle.
Funeral services were held on Friday February 24,
2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Martin Schwartz Funeral Home and Crematory, 1234 South
Madison Street, Lancaster, Wisconsin, with Rev. Pamela Strakeljahn
officiating. Burial was in the Aupperle Cemetery,
Ellenboro Township. Family and friends called on Friday, February 24, 2017

Bonnie Stluka
Bonnie L. Stluka, age 67, died on Monday, September 23, 2013, at her residence in Potosi. She was born on October 19, 1945, in rural Potosi, the daughter of Clinton and Edith (Fritz) Russell. On July 14, 1973, Bonnie was united in marriage to Dennis Stluka at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. She attended rural schools of Sinners Creek and Elmdale. Bonnie graduated from Lancaster High School, the University of Wisconsin at Platteville, and Saint Marys University of Minnesota. Bonnie taught second grade for forty-four years at Winskill Elementary School in Lancaster. She thoroughly enjoyed teaching all her students. Bonnie told them they were her children for the school year. Bonnie loved working in her yard and garden, especially caring for her beautiful lilies. She loved her dog, Winzor, two cats, Blackie and Tiger, and horse, Rebel.
Survivors include her husband, Dennis; her mother, Edith Russell; a sister, Arlene (Norbert) Wieland, a brother-in-law, Udell Ames, her aunts, and many nieces and nephews; her guardian angels and caregivers, Bonnie and Kenny Curran.
In addition to her father Clinton, Bonnie was preceded in death by a brother, Larry and her oldest sister, Delores Toddy Ames.

Arlene Stoeffler
Arlene Mary (Laufenberg) Stoeffler,
age 91, of Mount Hope, passed away peacefully with family by her side Saturday,
February 6, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Center in Fennimore, where she had
resided for nearly two years.
Through her life as a big sister, wife, mother,
grandmother and great-grandmother, Arlene always put her family and faith first.
Even to her final days, she worried about missing sending a card for a birthday
or anniversary, and tried to finish crocheting an afghan for a graduating
grandson - continuing a tradition her mother had started many years before.
Arlene was born April 5, 1924, in Glen Haven
Township, to William and Leona (Wood) Laufenberg. As the eldest of eight
children in the depths of the Depression, she attended school until the eighth
grade and helped on the family farm near Beetown. Her future husband,
Raymond Elwood Stoeffler, came to work on the farm in 1940. Arlene's dad had
planted crops for Elwood's parents, and Elwood worked to pay down the debt.
They began dating in 1942 and were married a year
later, on July 5, 1943, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bloomington. After
serving a little more than a year in the Navy, he returned home to a growing
family and shortly thereafter they moved to Mount Hope, where Elwood began a
career as a mechanic. He owned and operated Stoeffler's Garage before retiring
in June 1984. He died unexpectedly a year later, on July 7, 1985, at a family
gathering.
Music was an important part of Elwood and Arlene's
life, starting from their teen-age years on the farm when he started playing a
mouth organ, moving on to play mandolin and later guitar. While he picked up
music easily, Arlene couldn't carry a tune - but it never stopped her from
singing along and enjoying the performances of her husband, children and others.
Arlene was a storyteller and always inquisitive about
the latest news from family and friends. She enjoyed sewing and housekeeping in
earlier years, and later learned to crochet and knit. She loved playing cards,
taking pictures to display in her house, attending musical and sporting events
at school, and watching or listening to college and professional sports. She was
active and served in leadership roles in St. Lawrence O'Toole Catholic Church
and the Deanery of the Madison Diocese, the West Grant Lioness Club and the
American Legion Auxiliary. After raising her children, she enjoyed traveling -
first with Elwood and then later with other family. In addition to many family
vacations and trips to attend graduations and weddings, she visited Ireland four
times with Elwood and once after he died. She also toured Europe with her sister
Joanne and took a trip to Brazil in 1998 with her son David to visit the family
of her Brazilian "son," former exchange student Orlando Stevaux Galvao.
She is survived by her seven children: William
(Sharon) of Palm Harbor, Florida; Patricia (Terry) Winkers of Boscobel; Linda
(Harry) Miller of McGregor, Iowa; James (Pat) of Fennimore; Joseph of Mount
Hope; Mary Hendrickson of Sherman, Texas; and David (Rose) of La Crosse; 18
grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; five siblings, LeRoy, Carl and Carolyn
Keeney of Mount Hope, Doris Krogman of Prairie du Chien and Joanne (Charles
"Mike") Carroll of McGregor, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Laufenberg,
Lancaster; and many nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends, including those
she became close to in her final months at Good Samaritan.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death
by her parents and two siblings, Lee Laufenberg and Marjorie Miller, as well as
a daughter-in-law, Rita Stoeffler, a son-in law, Anthony Hendrickson, and a
granddaughter, Sarah Stoeffler, two sisters-in-law, Ardith and Belva Laufenberg,
two brothers-in-law, Edwin Keeney and Charles Krogman.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday
February 13, 2016, at St. Lawrence O'Toole Catholic Church, rural Mount Hope at
11:00 a.m. with Monsignor Gerard Healy and the Reverend Miguel Galvez
officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with a lunch to follow at
Queen of All Saints St Mary's church hall in Fennimore, WI. Family and friends
called on Friday, February 12, 2016, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the
Martin Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Bloomington, where a parish rosary
was prayed at 3:45 p.m. Friends also called on Saturday, February 13,
2016, from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. In lieu of plants
and flowers an Arlene M. Stoeffler Memorial Fund has been established.
Joseph Stoeffler
Joseph R. Stoeffler, age 61, passed
away on Friday, January 6, 2017, at UW Hospitals, Madison.
He was born on January 22, 1955, the son of Raymond and Arlene
(Laufenberg) Stoeffler. Joe graduated from West Grant
High School in 1973 and furthered his education at Western Wisconsin
Technical College in La Crosse. He was united in marriage
on April 8, 1978, to Rita A. Kamrath at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tomah.
Joe owned and operated Joe's Repair in Mount Hope.
He was also employed at various automotive and car dealerships.
Joe worked for Huebsch, Swenson & Son, Pink Automotive, Les Mack
Chevrolet, and Braudt Automotive. He served as mayor of
Mount Hope for over 20 years and was a dedicated member of the Mount Hope
Volunteer Fire Department and served as the Fire Chief and Secretary.
He was also a member of St. Lawrence O'Toole Catholic Church.
Joe enjoyed camping, auto racing, and snowmobiling.
He dearly loved his family and keeping up with their activities.
Survivors include his daughters: Andrea (Matt) Mezera
and Kim (fianc Matt Van Rixel) Stoeffler; four grandchildren: Cody, Mason,
Madison, and Clay Mezera; his siblings: Bill (Sharon);
Patricia (Terry) Winkers; Linda (Harry "Junior") Miller; Jim (Pat); Mary
Hendrickson; David Stoeffler; his mother-in-law: Beatta Kamrath and her
family; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death
by his loving wife, Rita in 2007; his father-in-law, Harry Kamrath; and his
brother-in-law, Tony Hendrickson.

2017, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Lawrence O'Toole Catholic Church in Mount Hope

Henry Stohlmeyer
Henry J. "Hank" Stohlmeyer, 81, of
Potosi, passed away on Friday, April 28, 2017, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home
in Lancaster, WI. He was born on October 8, 1935, in Potosi, the son
of Clarence and Evelyn (Schmelz) Stohlmeyer. Henry graduated from St.
Andrew Catholic High School in 1953. He entered the US Naval Reserve.
On April 11, 1955, Hank was united in marriage to Celine Ryan at Sylvia
Switch Church, Zwingle, IA. He was employed with Dubuque Packing
Company, FDL, and Knights of Columbus as an Insurance Field Agent. In
his early years, Hank enjoyed operating Stohlmeyer LTD. He, along with
his son, Steven, and numerous friends, put in numerous lawns in the
Tri-State area and collected garbage in the Tennyson area. Hank
enjoyed bowling, playing softball, cards with friends, and cribbage.
Over the years, he prepared many individuals income tax returns. Hank
was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus,
including 4th Degree, the Catholic Knights Branch 42, and the
Tennyson Village Board.
Surviving are his loving wife of 62 years, Celine;
their son Steven (Cheryl) Stohlmeyer, daughters Stacey (Bruce) Gardiner and
Susan Stohlmeyer, their grandchildren Tiffany (David) Sarnowski, Tim
Stohlmeyer, Tyler Stohlmeyer, Tia Stohlmeyer, Beth (Nicholas) Gladis, Brooke
Gardiner, and Jacob Schmitt, his siblings Michael (Elizabeth) Stohlmeyer,
Harold (Mary Pat) Stohlmeyer, Eva Lyons, Pauline "Teenie" Wiezorek, William
(Mary Ellen) Stohlmeyer, Mary Ann (Bob) Durst, brother-in-law, Richard
Powers, sister-in-law, Sandra Stohlmeyer, brother-in-law, Loras Collins, and
sisters-in-law, Mildred Ryan, Rosalee Donahue, Joyce Till, and Leann
Laughlin, many nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Hank was preceded in death
by his daughter Sandra Stohlmeyer, his twin sister Elizabeth "Betty" Powers,
siblings Harriet Stohlmeyer, Paul Stohlmeyer, and Joseph "Bimp" Stohlmeyer,
brothers-in-law, Tom Lyons and Edward "Ed" Wiezorek, and members of the
Ryan and Laughlin families.

2, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tennyson with Father
Bernie Rott officiating. Burial was in the Mount Olivet Cemetery,
Key West, IA. Family and friends called on Monday, May 1, 2017, from
3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tennyson where a 2:45

Stohlmeyer
Joseph J. "Bimp" Stohlmeyer, age 79, of
Potosi, passed away on Thursday, February 25, 2016, at University of Iowa
Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, IA. He was born on January
12, 1937, in Potosi, the son of Clarence and Evelyn (Schmelz) Stohlmeyer.
Bimp graduated from St. Andrew Catholic High School in 1955.
He was employed with Dubuque Packing Company from 1955 until 1967, when
he purchased a service station. Bimp owned and operated
Stohlmeyer Service Station for many years. After he sold the
service station, Bimp was employed at Kieler Garage until his purchase of Bimp's
Service in Potosi, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 2008.
In 1961, Bimp entered the United States National Guard and served his
country during the Berlin Crisis. He was honorably discharged
in 1967. Bimp enjoyed car races, deer hunting and bowling.
In his younger years, he enjoyed traveling. Bimp was a
member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic
Knights Branch 42, St. Andrew Choir, the American Legion Post No. 473 of Potosi,
and was a charter member of the Potosi/Tennyson Lions Club.
Bimp also served on the Potosi School Board for 19 years. He
sponsored Bimp's Softball and Bowling teams.
Survivors include his siblings: Henry
(Celine); Michael (Elizabeth); Harold (Mary Pat) Stohlmeyer; Eva Lyons; Pauline
"Teenie" Wiezorek; William J. (Mary E.) Stohlmeyer; Mary Ann (Robert) Durst;

Helen M. Stoker
Helen M. Stoker, age 72, of Lancaster, passed away on Friday, September 16, 2011, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster. She was born on July 23, 1939, in Chelsea, MA, the daughter of William and Mary (Scanell) Lush. Joe was stationed with the US Navy in South Boston, MA. It was there that he met Helen M. Lush and they were united in marriage on February 7, 1959, at St. Rose Catholic Church, Chelsea, MA. It was later that year that they moved to Potosi, and in 1961, the couple moved to Lancaster. Helen was employed at the Dug Out Supper Club, and later at Orchard Manor Nursing Home. In 1973, she became a volunteer driver for Grant County Social Services. Helen volunteered for over twenty-seven years and was very devoted to giving comfort and care to the people she helped. She was a member of St. Clement Catholic Church and enjoyed playing Bingo. Helen dearly loved spending time with her family and was looking forward to the birth of twin grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Stoker, Lancaster; children: Richard (Terri) Stoker, Pleasant Valley, NY; Mary J. Stoker; Thad Stoker, both of Madison; two grandchildren: Devin Stoker and Chloe Conlan; two brothers: Alvin Lush; Tim (Donna) Lush, all of Chelsea, MA; a sister, Patsy (B.J.) Berntsen, McLean, VA; other relatives and many friends.

Walter A. Stoney
Walter A. Stoney, age 72, of
Platteville, passed away on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at Grant
Regional Health Center in Lancaster. He was born on August 11,
1941, in Lancaster, the son of Arthur and Dorothy (Wiedmann) Stoney.
Walter attended country school. He farmed with his
parents and worked in the mines in Tennyson. On September 12,
1962, Walter was united in marriage to Julie Rogers in Galena, IL.
Walter was employed with Williams Tree Service trimming trees for
forty years. He enjoyed collecting antique tractors and
machinery, hunting, camping, animals of all kinds, and spending time
in the woods. Walter also enjoyed spending time with his
family and grandchildren. He loved the simple life the woods
provided. Walter will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Julie; their
children: Bob (Karla); Jay (Audrey); Roger; Stan (Darcy
Tracy); Dawn Stoney; Angi (Jim) Humes; six grandchildren: David,
Lucas, Cody, Cheyenne, Jessica and Shelby; two great-grandchildren:
Lani and Landyn; his siblings: Kate (Jim) Flynn; Mary (Grant)
Edge; Joyce Daniels; Pat (Ronnie) Fritz; John (Deb); Paul (Louise);

Carol Strokosch
Carol I. Strokosch, age 84, of
Dubuque, formerly of Lancaster, and Glen Ellyn, IL, died Saturday,
October 19, 2013 at Luther Manor in Dubuque.
Carol was born on August 22, 1929 in Dubuque, a daughter of Theodore
and Cecilia (Nehls) Dodge.
She grew up in the Lancaster, WI area, and
graduated from Lancaster High School. Carol then
received her degree from Moody Bible College. On
June 5, 1954, she married Eric A. Strokosch at the First Baptist
Church in Lancaster. She worked as a secretary
for Crawford & Company until her retirement.
Carol enjoyed doing arts and crafts, making
ceramics, camping at Lake Holiday in Sandwich, IL, traveling, and
had a great sense of humor. She loved her dogs,
especially her first garbage disposal, Buttons.
Carol is survived by a sister, Charlotte Ruchti,
Lancaster; a brother-in-law, Robert Bob Hirsch, Dubuque; and
several nieces, nephews, and other relatives & friends,
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eric in
1988; her parents; her sister, Jenny Hirsch; her brother, Ted Spud
Dodge; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Dodge; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth
Ruchti.
Funeral services were held at 11 am on Friday,
October 25, 2013 at Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster, with Pastor
Larry Wise officiating. Burial was in
Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. Friends called from
3 to 7 pm on Thursday, October 24, 2013, at the funeral home, and
one hour prior to the service Friday.
Idabell Studnicka
Idabell Studnicka, age 70, of Lancaster, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster. She was born August 13, 1937 in Grant County, WI, the daughter of Leroy and Frances (Taylor) Barr. On October 24, 1959, she married Marvin R. Studnicka at the Beetown Gospel Hall. Idabells working career spanned 36 years at M&I Bank and Dicks Supermarket, both in Lancaster. She dearly enjoyed the precious time she spent with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Marvin Studnicka, Lancaster; one son, Brent (Gail) Studnicka, New Lenox, IL; two daughters: Robbin (Shane) Zenz, Blue Mounds; and Leah (Mark) Spindler, Mauston; six grandchildren: Alex, Nathan, and Jenna Studnicka, Taylor and Cletus Zenz, and Annabell Spindler; one brother, Bernard (Annabel) Barr, Soldiers Grove; and four sisters: Donna (Tom) Williams, Kewaskum; Ruth Hinch, Madison; Georgia (Doug) Klarman, Loves Park, IL; and Martha (Charles) Schaefer, Cross Plains.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Bill Barr; her sister, Naomi Nickel; and her niece, Vicki Hinch.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 28, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the Lancaster Youth & Ag Building. Burial was in Dodge Cemetery, Beetown Township. Visitation was held on Sunday, April 27, 2008 from 1:00 5:00 p.m. at the Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster, and after 9:30 a.m. Monday morning at the Youth & Ag Building. In lieu of plants and flowers, an Idabell Studnicka memorial fund has been established.
John F. Stuer
John F. Stuer, Sr, age 87, of Dubuque, died Saturday, December 22, 2012 at his home. John was born on September 26, 1925, the son of Frederick and Lydia (Hird) Stuer.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946, and was stationed on the U.S.S. St. Paul during World War II. John married Marian Louise McKelvey on March 15, 1948 in Lancaster. He worked at John Deere in Dubuque, and in 1962 started and owned Star Uniforms. John was a police officer for the Platteville Police Department from 1950 to 1954, and was a sheriff for the Grant County Sheriff Department from 1955 to 1959.
John is survived by his son, John Jr. (Janet); his grandchildren, Julie (Brian) Thiel and John Stuer III; his great-grandchildren, Kallie, C.J., and Ian Thiel; his beloved dog, Bucky; and a niece & nephew.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian in 1984; his parents; and two sisters, Adeline Haltmeyer and Theodora Faris.
Private Family Services were held at Martin Schwartz Funeral Home, Platteville. Burial with military honors was in Hillside Cemetery, Platteville.
Evelyn A. Sturmer
Evelyn A. Sturmer, age 93, of Lancaster, formerly of the Bloomington/Beetown area, died on Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at the Lancaster Care Center in Lancaster. She was born on May 2, 1917, in Bancroft, IA, the daughter of William and Mary (Schneider) Sudmeier. Evelyn attended school in Bloomington. On July 2, 1940, Evelyn was united in marriage to Alton Lee Sturmer in Bloomington. After their marriage, the couple farmed in the Bloomington and Beetown area. She was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters, Study Club and Card Club, all of Bloomington. In 2004, Evelyn moved to Lancaster. She was a member of St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster. Evelyn enjoyed playing cards and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her children: Ronald (Nancy) Sturmer, Lancaster; Robert (Carole) Sturmer, Bloomington; Kathleen (Rodney) Kalish, Bangor; Marsha Wagner, Darlington; Dave (Peggy) Sturmer, Lancaster; James (D.K.) Sturmer, Crawford, NE; a daughter-in-law, Marge Sturmer, Bloomington; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two sisters: Lorraine Lee, Platteville; Marie Knutson, Platteville; two sisters-in-law: Betty Sudmeier, Platteville; Mabel Sudmeier, Lancaster; other relatives and many friends.
In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Alton on November 23, 1977; a son, Gary Pete Sturmer, a son-in-law, Lowell Wagner; her brothers and sisters: Dorothy Horsfall, Lucille Sudmeier, Edwin Sudmeier, Luvern Sudmeier, Rosella Schmitz, William Sudmeier, Lillian Schmitz, LeRoy Sudmeier.
Funeral services were held on Friday, January 21, 2011, at St. Clement Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. in Lancaster with Father William Seipp officiating. Burial was in Dodge Cemetery, Beetown Township. Family and friends called on Thursday, January 20, 2011, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Lancaster, where a 3:45 p.m. rosary will be held. Friends also called on Friday, January 21, 2011, from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church.
Mabel M. Sudmeier
Mabel M. Sudmeier, age 93, of Lancaster, died on Tuesday, August 16, 2011, at Grant Regional Health Center, Lancaster. She was born on May 12, 1918, in Cuba City, the daughter of Henry and Bertha (Kall) Schulte. Mabel attended school in Cuba City. On January 8, 1946, she was united in marriage to Edwin Sudmeier at St. Marys Catholic Church in Bloomington. Mabel was employed with the Bloomington School System as a cook for many years. She and her husband enjoyed dancing and Mabel loved to go out to eat and play euchre. Mabel was an avid sports fan and was a member of St. Clement Catholic Church.
Survivors include her brother, Robert (Nancy) Schulte, Nebraska; three sisters-in-law: Lorraine Lee, Marie Knutson, and Betty Sudmeier all of Platteville; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin on June 20, 2005, and nine brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 18, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster with Father William Seipp officiating. Burial was in St. Marys Cemetery, Bloomington. Family and friends called on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster is assisting the family.

Robert A. Bob Swart, age 85, of Platteville, passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, IA. Robert Arthur Swart was born on March 26, 1926 at home near Cuba City, a son of William H. Swart and Marie Hinman Swart. He attended elementary school at the Model, Little Red, and Belmont schools, graduating from Belmont High School in 1943. Bob married Betty Jane Kies on December 27, 1948 at the First Methodist Church in Platteville. They farmed most of their married life, retiring to Platteville in 1991. Their family includes children, Kristie (Dennis) Popp, Belmont, Gregory (Julie) Swart, Auburndale, Susan (Jeffrey) Hillary, Goodyear, AZ, and Jeffrey Swart, Los Angeles, CA. Grandchildren are Nathan Popp, Melissa (Rob) Martin, Joshua Swart, Shauna Swart, Shanen (Cynthia) Swart, Nicole Swart, Nicholas Hillary, Marc (fianc Simonne Wood) Hillary, and Camille Swart. Great-Grandchildren are Hannah and Connor Popp, and Gavin Swart. After retirement Bob enjoyed working for R and P, and K and J Floor Companies at the Platteville Kmart location. His hobbies included fishing, watching the Cubs, jigsaw puzzles, and also enjoyed stories from his grandchildren. He especially enjoyed a good joke! Bob was a member of the Whig United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Marc (1955) and Steven (2008); a grandson, Sean Hillary (1988); his parents; maternal and paternal grandparents; in-laws, John W. and Lucille (Tracy) Kies; and a brother, Richard.
In addition to his wife and children, Bob is survived by his brother, William (friend Joanne Schober), Platteville; many nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Gerry Swart, Platteville, Ila Sampson, Cuba City; and brother and sister-in-law, Elton and Lucille Kies, Platteville.
Funeral services were held at 11 am on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at Martin Schwartz Funeral Home, Platteville, with Pastor Karl Goodfellow officiating. Visitation was from 4 to 8 pm on Friday, May 20, at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Platteville.

Linda I. Swartzbaugh age 95,
formerly of Cassville, passed away on February 16, 2016 at Manor Care Nursing
Home in Platteville. She was born on April 14, 1920 in Hancock, WI to Edward and
Francis (Novak) Scharf. Linda married Emil Hartwig in 1937. She
later divorced Emil and married Curtis Swartzbaugh on September 14, 1958.
They lived in Chicago for 38 years. They moved to Cassville in 1997, to be
closer to family. She enjoyed bowling, baking apple pies, tending to her
flowers, watching The Price is Right, and watching the Chicago Cubs.
Linda is survived by a daughter-in-law, Kathy Hartwig
of Auburndale, WI (formerly Cassville); a grandson, Bob (Katie) Hartwig of Arpin,
WI (formerly of Cassville); and two great grandchildren, Curtis and Carrieann
Hartwig of Arpin. Linda is further survived by Russel (Sharon) Sahlin of
Turlock, CA; a sister, Janet (Jim) Wright; and many nieces and nephews.
She was proceeded in death by her parents; her first
husband, Emil Hartwig; second husband, Curtis Swartzbaugh; a son, Robert
Hartwig; one brother and four sisters; and two nephews and two nieces.
Visitation was held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on
Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Martin Funeral Home in Cassville, followed by
graveside services at Cassville Cemetery with Rev. Jim McMahon officiating.

Shirley Sweeney
Shirley I. Sweeney, age 76, of Lancaster, died on Sunday, November 28, 2010, at her home in Lancaster surrounded by her loving family. She was born on October 24, 1934, in North Lancaster Township, the daughter of Henry and Lela (Bass) Rech. In 1952, Shirley graduated from Lancaster High School. She was employed as an administrative secretary with the Lancaster School system for eighteen years. On December 28, 1955, Shirley was united in marriage to Harold R. Sweeney in Dubuque, IA. She furthered her education at Southwest Technical College in Fennimore. Shirley was employed with Lancaster State Bank for six months before working for Grant County as a Deputy Clerk until her retirement in 1997. She was a member of the Lancaster United Methodist Church. Shirley enjoyed reading and traveling. She loved spending time with her family and was always available for her grandchildren.
Survivors include her loving husband, Harold Sweeney, Lancaster; her children: LuAnn (Steve) Hogler, Green Bay; Jill (Allen) Kvitek, Maribel; Kelly (Jeff) Clark, Appleton; her mother, Lela Rech, Lancaster; seven grandchildren; her brother and sisters: Dorothy Eck, Roger Rech, Linda Barr, Marcia (Dan) Mitchell, all of Lancaster; Sharon (Steve) Klein, Cassville; foreign exchange student, Anne (Philippe) Crousle`, Paris, France; other relatives and many friends.
Shirley was preceded in death by her father, her daughter, Lori, and her brothers, Charles and Stephen Rech.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at the Lancaster United Methodist Church with Pastor Barbara Cook officiating. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. James E. Sykes
James E. Sykes, age 82, of Bagley, passed away Sunday, June 27, 2010, peacefully at his home with his family by his side. He had been ill for sometime from lung cancer. James has been a resident of Bagley for the past nineteen years, originally from Round Lake, IL. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his loving wife of thirty-six years, Lois Sykes, Bagley; three children: Donna Rossi, Ingleside, IL; Debbye Hale, Callaway, VA; Gail Downs, Ford City, PA; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
Memorial services were held on Friday, July 2, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bagley United Methodist Church with Pastor Mary Ann Floerke officiating. Military honors were conducted by the American Legion Post No. 482 of Bagley at the church. Family and friends called on Friday, July 2, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of plants and flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Grant County Hospice. Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington is serving the family.
